A rare and unique antique African Benin carved coconut box presented to Mr Morris by J Morford, Education Nigeria. The coconut is relief carved with various figures, a bird and a snake with script. The gift is detailed in an accompanying letter dated 18th June 1920 and he details in his letter of thanks that the coconut was carved by a boy of around 12 and shows that ‘the thief has been caught in the art of stealing by another man and they begin to fight. The words are “The thief this box, now them fight, no man can stop them only God” ‘. The God is portrayed to the lid with arrows and a snake. The letter has been encapsulated to preserve it.
