A rare and very elegant early 19th century Empire Gueridon, stamped seven times by the Belgium cabinetmaker Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864). Very Fine and decorative amboyna veneer, ebonized fruitwood and gilt bronze decoration. The three scrolled legs are made of bent and laminated wood, terminating in gilt bronze ram’s heads. This was a revolutionary technique at the time and Chapuis was one of the very first makers to use it (and probably invented it).
Jean-Joseph Chapuis established his first workshop in Brussels in 1798. In 1806 he was called to value French furniture at the château de Laeken and thereafter supplied furniture for the château himself.
